Haiti - Elections : First Round in December ? 07/08/2013 12:20:54
Tholbert Jean Alexis, President of the Lower House, remains optimistic, indicating having consulted the executives of the Transitional College of the Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP) and of the Minustah, who assured him that within four months, the elections can take place "The first round is possible late November or early December..." stating that if the project is submitted to Parliament on August 8, parliamentarians could vote the electoral law in a week and the electoral machine could then be turned on... The U.S. Democratic Senator (Florida) Bill Nelson, who was on a four-day visit to Haiti, after having met various political figures, including members of the opposition, said he was surprised by the degree of polarization between the opposition leaders and the President Martelly. "I saw no willingness to come together to compromise, which is essential for a struggling democracy to flourish [...]" adding that despite the animosity, the president indicated "that he will hold parliamentary elections this year" claiming having asked him "he ansered me yes, they will be achieved by the end of the year," said U.S. Senator.
