Haiti - Environment : Work to strengthen the banks of the Rivière Grise
On Friday, Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, accompanied among others by Thomas Jacques, Minister of Agriculture, Deputy Rony Célestin, President of the Commission agriculture and environment in the Lower House and Ludner Remarais, Director General of the Bureau of Mines, paid a visit to the Cul de Sac, to oversee the work of strengthening of banks of the Rivière Grise.

These works, funded by the Treasury to the tune of 300 million Gourdes and under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, consist in the embankment and consolidation of 15 km of riverbank, to the gabionade of strategic points and reforestation of the surrounding area.

Under the first phase, which started in the month of April, 6.5 km of shoreline have been treated a total of 8 km (the second phase has already started) "This is the first time since 1963 that the Government makes such work. From the perspective of the protection of the population, the environment and local agriculture, we take adequate measures against the emergency of our compatriots and supervision that we must provide. It is our duty, our responsibility to act on their behalf and to ensure their safety" declared the Head of Government.



"The work of ditching, of gabionade and reshaping of the Rivière Grise, as well as treatment of gullies, the reforestation of its watersheds will ensure the risk mitigation in the Cul de Sac and its surrounding areas, often hit by floods. They contribute to the protection of agricultural infrastructure andof 890 hectares of land planted especially with bananas and sugarcae," added the Minister of Agriculture, who was accompanied by the Engineer Agronomist Arnoux Séverin, Departmental Director of the West.

This visit to the Rivièrte Grise of the Prime Minister, is part of an effort to ensure the progress of the development projects of the Government to improve the living conditions of the population. The Head of Government also intends to ensure the monitoring and cohesion of the governmental actions.
