Haiti - Economy : High potential for the expansion of the Haitian economy 27/09/2013 15:55:49 "Haiti can use Trade broadly as growth driver to emerge from its current classification of least developed country to a less dependent economy able to get out of the rut of poverty for hundreds of thousands of people vulnerable today" said Wilson Laleau, Minister of Economy and Finance, adding that "The Government also has its part to play. It is, among other things, to implement quality infrastructure, to develop an appropriate legal framework to ensure transparent management of public finances, develop a climate conducive to productive investment and business, simplify the tax system and ease the application." Among the economic sectors identified as potential growth drivers include the agricultural sector it holds a significant export potential, notably through Vetiver and other essential oils, francisque mango, seafood, coffee, and cocoa beans . Are also mentioned the textile industry, booming and major source of employment, with nearly 90% of exports, the tourism as well as services supported by the information technology. However, the full realization of the development potential of these activities, essential for job creation and poverty reduction, would require a significant improvement in the business climate, the reduction of production costs by improving infrastructure and those of commercial transactions, and the pursuit of policies and reforms necessary for the promotion of exports. Déo Ndikumana, he Director of the World Bank in Haiti dclared "The World Bank Group has agreed to ensure the conduct of this study to support the Government's efforts to create the conditions necessary to optimize the benefits of regional and international trade. This support is part of its overall strategy to promote the development of the private sector for inclusive economic growth and job creation. To this end the Group of the World Bank supported the Government's actions to improve the business environment, promote investment financing the private sector growth, and has also launched a program for the identification and implementation of the priorities of trade facilitation in order to reduce the costs of doing business in Haiti." The study is part of the Integrated Framework Reinforced for trade-related assistance, a program to help the least developed countries to promote economic growth and reduce poverty through greater participation in regional and international trade. The recommendations are included in a Action Matrix, which serves as a basis for reform and to the definition of a technical assistance program for a country can participate in international trade and benefit from the growth potential and poverty reduction.
