Haiti - Environment : Illegal exploitation of quarries and rivers
The Directorate General of Bureau of Mines and Energy indicated that it has issued a set of decisions to better regulate the management of quarries and river sediments in the department of the West.

Thus, together with the Ministry of Environment, sand and aggregates quarries located at Morne Hospital and extending to Laboule 12, were, with the exception of St. Jude, closed fot the operations. It was the same for those on the National Road #1 at the height of Carries and of Trou-foban.

Provisions regulating the use of sediments of the River Grise, currently practiced in an illegal and anarchic way, will out soon, Releases will come to reinforce all these provisions, taken not only to ensure better protection of the environment, lives and property, but also and above all, to prevail the rights and interests of the state throughout the quarrying sector.

Moreover, the communications office of the Prime Minister in a notice indicated "The Ministries of Public Works, Transport and Communications, Environment, Interior and Local Government, Justice and Public Safety, Agriculture Natural Resources and Rural Development remind the general public and operators of the River Grise in particular, that under the provisions of the Decree of 2 March 1984 and Article 187 of the Decree of 26 January 2006 on the exploitation of mineral resources, it is now forbidden to :

  • Sourcing in building materials in the River Grise from the area of Tabarre known as Pont de Tabarre, up to the bridge of the Route Neuf that spans the river ;
  • Dispose wastes and construction debris or any other kind in the River Grise.

Any exploitation authorized of quarries of building materials must be carried out upstream of the river or more precisely at the level of "Bassin Général" by taking the road of the charismatic renewal, through the one of Tabarre, the road of Pernier up to the Church of Fatima and the road of Dumay by that of the Croix-des-Bouquets. Agents of the Bureau of Mines and Energy, the Environmental Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Environment and the National Police of Haiti will be deployed to control the trucks using the roads leading to the prohibited areas.

Any offender to these provisions will be punished according to law."
