Haiti - Reconstruction : Successful Visit of Prime Minister to Venezuela 09/10/2013 12:44:13 The discussions mainly focused on the participation of Haiti in the "Economic Zone Petrocaribe (PTA)" and agricultural products that must be provided the Haitian government to pay the debt under the Petrocaribe agreement. Following the proposals of both parties, an agreement was finally reached on a list of agricultural products, which will form part of this cooperation, as well as the quality criteria they must meet before being sold in the Venezuelan market. Another visit is planned in Venezuela, October 18th to finalize the agreement and sign a contract for the sequences of payment. This visit which aimed to strengthen the Haitian-Venezuelan cooperation has also allowed the Haitian government to express to the Venezuelan officials its interest in acquiring new products, such as 100,000 barrels of oil per month and asphalt. Prime Minister Lamothe, met with the Secretary General of the PTA, in order to determine the best way to structure the joint Haitian-Venezuelan company that will allow Haiti, as part of this cooperation, to build new road infrastructure to the benefit of the Haitian people. Venezuela promised 4,400 units valued at over 260 million U.S. dollars, 3,900 housing will be built in the metropolitan area and 500 to Ile-à-Vache, where Venezuela in partnership with the Haitian government, also contributes to a 240-room hotel infrastructure project, estimated at $66 million. Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, finalized several agreements on sustainable tourism development projects. The Prime Minister also met Gustavo Hernandez, President of the Development Bank of Venezuela (BANDES), also President of the "Banco de Alba," which reiterated the willingness of Venezuela to support the Haitian government's literacy program. To this end, a budget of $10 million was made available to the Haitian government, for literacy about 1 million Haitians. These exchanges also allowed the two Governments to agree on several major projects such as the construction of health facilities (hospitals, clinics) for an amount of $15 million, but also to an increase in capacity of the three power plants built by Venezuela in Gonaives, Cap Haitien and Carrefour. In addition, the President of the BANDES promised to disburse 10 million U.S. dollars on a total of 33 million originally allocated to finance the construction of the International Airport of Cap-Haitien, which will bear the name of Commander Hugo Chavez.
