Haiti - Social : World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty 18/10/2013 11:57:05 Message of Office : "To all those who are facing every day to difficult living conditions, which every day are victims of hunger and exclusion, the Government wishes to reiterate that they are not alone and that, faithful to its commitment and to its promises, it has not ceased to work to reducing this poverty. It is with pride that it want today share with them the progress made and tell them to keep hope, because the end of the ordeal is at the horizon. In the space of a year, we have won victories, shy but determinants over poverty. When the entire Haitian society will join us to be indignant and fight the unacceptable conditions in which live more than 70% of us, we will have finally made the biggest step to overcome poverty and achieve the Haitian miracle. It is generally accepted that strong and sustained is necessary before reducing poverty. But the government thought that the poor had suffered enough and decided to tackle head-on the economic development and the fight against poverty, because the quality of life should not be reduced to a by-product of economic growth. The fight against poverty must be a priority, we should never accept that someone is hungry and the government's duty is to ensure that every citizen can enjoy their fundamental rights. The facts confirm the correctness of that choice. Through our aggressive approach against poverty, 2,193,326 of our brothers and sisters living in extreme poverty have benefited from one or the other of our social programs through which their poverty declined. For the program Ti manman Cheri, whose goal is to help children from disadvantaged classes to complete their cycle of schooling, the number of beneficiaries across the country already reached 103.165 and this is just the beginning. When economic measures will begin to bear fruit and that our agriculture has given us our food autonomy, that millions of tourists disembark at our ports and airports, that investors attracted by the openness policy of the Government will have created thousands of jobs, we will have the opportunity to see that poverty is no longer part of the Haitian table. The Government invites the Haitian o meditate on the theme of the day that we celebrate today : together toward a world without discrimination. This theme relates to the problems of poverty, because discrimination causes exclusion, which in turn leads to poverty. By eliminating discrimination, we eliminate what divides us, we foster mutual support, cooperation and love. The Government alone can not overcome the misery and poverty. All we are asked to go beyond the social or political divide and to indignant against poverty, individualism and consumerism. It is in solidarily that we can achieve happiness, this state of mind that is won only through cooperation and that could not find its place if poverty remained. n this day when the whole world cries for the Eradication of Poverty, the office of the Minister Delegate in charge of human rights and the fight against extreme poverty pays tribute to the courage of the poor families of this country and requires the collaboration of all the Haitian people to build this rule of law where all citizens can enjoy a happiness that they have been waiting for so long."
