Haiti - Diaspora : Message from the Consul General of Haiti in Chicago
Sunday at the Church of Our Lady of Peace (Chicago) a Mass was celebrated in honor of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the "Founding Father of the Haitian Nation." In this circumstance, Lesly Condé, the Consul General of Haiti in Chicago delivered a message...

Message from the Consul General :
"Friends of Haïti,
Frè m ak sè m yo,

Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago, I consider myself immensely privileged to be in your company in the house of the Lord as we commemorate the two hundred and seventh anniversary of the death of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. I greet you all very warmly.

On October 17, 1806, the Father of the haitian Nation was assassinated in a most cowardly manner. His mutilated body was then abandoned in the street. The event we commemorate today is therefore a sad one. However, we are not going to spend our time wondering what motivated his fellow soldiers who committed such a despicable act two years after one of the greatest victories in the history of mankind.

Indeed, when we remember Jean-Jacques Dessalines, we see a man of great courage who dedicated his whole life to the struggle for freedom. He was also a clever tactician; clever enough to put his cause above his personal antagonisms. Today, 209 years after our independence, we are still looking for this unity without which there can be no national prestige. This is why we must continue to celebrate the life of Jean-Jacques Dessalines and hope to, one day, become worthy of his example.

Mezanmi, se yon gwo plezi pou mwen pou m avèk nou lan kay gran mèt la pandan n ap sonje 207èm anivèsè la mo Papa Nasyon nou an. Lan non Konsila Jeneral Ayiti lan Chikago, m ap salye nou ak anpil lanmou.

Jodi a, 209 an aprè endepandans la,`n ap chèche inite sa a. Nou bezwen li paske se li ki pou fè prestij nou. Se pou tèt sa fo nou kontinye selebre la vi Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Petèt yon jou, nou ka rive swiv egzanp li.

Pou m fini, m ap remèsye dirijan kongregasyon an ki toujou mache avèk kominote a. Frè m ak sè m yo, mèsi pou prezans nou. Ke bon Dye beni nou !

In closing, I must thank the heads of this congregation for their faithful support to our community.

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for being here.

May God bless you !"
