Haiti - Clean energy : 3 new solar power plants in the Northeast
The Ministry of Public Works, the Embassy of Japan in Haiti and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have reached a crucial stage in the construction process of three solar power plants in the North-East department of Haiti, through the Rural Electrification and Women's Empowerment Project (ERAF), by inaugurating two of the three power plants, those of Capotille and Vallière.

The Republic of Haiti faces enormous challenges in access to energy, particularly in its rural regions, where only 2% of the population has access to electricity. In addition, the country is massively dependent on fossil fuels, with diesel and fuel oil accounting for 80% of electricity production, leading to a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions and economic vulnerability to fluctuations in fuel prices.

Faced with this reality, the Government and UNDP jointly launched the ERAF project in 2018, financed mainly by the Government of Japan to the tune of nearly 5.5 million US dollars with a contribution from UNDP Haiti of 916,000 dollars and implemented works in the municipalities of Vallières, Mont-Organisé and Capotille.

These 3 newly built photovoltaic solar power plants will promote access to clean and sustainable energy at an affordable cost to nearly 2,000 households in the target municipalities.

The power plants are equipped with state-of-the-art solar panels, capable of generating clean, renewable energy throughout the year, reducing dependence on fossil energy sources and contributing to the fight against climate change.

The construction of these solar power plants is not limited to improving access to electricity, it also aims to strengthen the role of women within rural communities. By providing employment and training opportunities in the field of solar energy, the ERAF project aims to promote the economic empowerment of women, encouraging them to become key players in the clean energy sector.

Project results in figures :

  • The completed construction of the electrical distribution networks of the three micro-grids, totaling more than 20 kilometers of lines (medium and low voltage);
  • Carrying out the detailed engineering of the three photovoltaic solar power plants;
  • The completed construction of the Mont-Organisé solar power plant, including a 289 kWp photovoltaic solar field, an 800 kWh storage system, and a 430 kVA diesel generator (backup).
  • The successful construction of the 202 kWp solar power plant in Capotille, equipped with a 430 kWh storage system and a 250 kVA backup diesel generator.
  • The successful construction of the 202 kWp solar power plant in Vallières, equipped with a 430 kWh storage system and a 250 kVA backup diesel generator.
