Haiti - Reconstruction : Inauguration of project of water supply and sanitation in South East
This Saturday, November 17, the Spanish Ambassador in Haiti, Manuel Hernandez-Ruigómez and Mr. Phillippe Cinéas, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works, will inaugurate the project of water supply and sanitation initiated by Spain, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Public Works between 2005 and 2012.

The total project budget is $ 6.3 million and was executed by the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA), priority partner of Spain in the field concerned, in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID).

The work done, have improved access to drinking water and sanitation of 70,000 beneficiaries in the rural areas of South-East of the country, especially in the municipalities of Bainet, Belle-Anse, Cayes-Jacmel, Côte de Fer, La Vallée de Jacmel, Jacmel and Marigot.

Main results achieved :

  • 16 water and sanitation systems built and 4 rehabilitated ;
  • 18 toilet blocks built in 16 schools and 2 in public places ;
  • 1,600 family latrine constructed ;
  • 20 management committees constituted.

The Spanish Embassy in Haiti welcomes the results achieved in the Southeast and encourages its partners to continue working in the right direction in this key sector for the well-being of the Haitian population.

Spain remains a major donor to Haiti in the fields of education, the productive sector, water and sanitation. In the latter sector, Spain has already invested $100 million through a Bilateral Fund Spain-Haiti (DINEPA) and $76 million through the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB).
