Haiti - Social : Rainwater Collection in morne des Commissaires (Thiotte) 13/12/2013 05:26:20 As part of a quick impact project funded by the United Nations Mission for Stabilization Haiti (Minustah), amounting to over one million gourdes, forty tanks were built and repaired in the locality of morne des Commissaires, while community participation in this project amounts to more than 144,000 gourdes. Aware of this alarming situation in which the population lives in this region, Marie Yolette Lyssé, officer of Civil Affairs of the Minustah showed the necessity and feasibility of the project to build tanks in the framework of a to the Association of Breeders of Morne des Commissaires (ASEM) "The construction of these tanks will allow residents to collect rainwater and ensure its quality for everyday use," she specified. Jean Petit Louis Verdier, the Head of ASEM, explained that about two years before the implementation of this project, field studies have shown that soil horizons of surface hardly contain clay and that it was composed of a karst limestone, often hollow presenting risks of subsidence ""The construction of these tanks with a capacity from 1,500 to 20.000 gallons meets the specificities of the area." Each beneficiary family of a cistern, will share water with its closest neighbors for personal hygiene, laundry and human consumption, livestock watering, watering nurseries and plants to ensure the crops. "With a water filter by family,w e considerably reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases," stated Yvrose Joachim, one of the beneficiaries teacher at the Ecole Nationale de Savane Zombi. That water allows more than 300 students at this school to use his tank to quench their thirst during break. "Without water, the soil may not be fertile, the quality of the cattle will be reduced and the population will pay for it," support Osnack Charles, farmer for over 10 years. In this area the absence of springs and rivers during dry periods creates serious water shortages. Capture rainwater for this shortage is the only solution for people of morne des Commissaires. Note that the lifespan of a tank is 15 years, while its sealing slab, can be estimated at 5 years. If the building meets all the standards and maintenance is done regularly, it can guarantee more than 30 years of service. HL/ HaitiLibre / Claudy Bélizaire (Correspondant Jacmel)
