Haiti - Security : The Government asked the maintenance and strengthening of the Minustah
Sunday at the visit to the Police Academy (Frères), of members of the delegation of the United Nations Security Council, Pierre Richard Casimir, the new Minister of Justice asked to maintain and strengthen the effective of the Minustah in Haiti "In the name of the president, the head of government and myself, I reiterate to the United Nations Security Council our request that it maintain its troop levels. On the contrary, their presence is needed to reinforce the UN mission's contingents during preparations to hold elections," stated the Minister to the members of the Security Council, stressing "In Haiti, like elsewhere, the electoral period is sometimes marked by tension and discord..."

Recall that the Security Council decided in October 2014 to extend the mandate of the UN mission in Haiti, but to reduce it by half, from 5.000 to 2.370 troops. The contingent of the United Nations Police (UNPOL) will remain unchanged at 2,601 men. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12880-haiti-security-un-mission-to-assess-the-prospects-for-stability.html

Later that same day, at the mission's closing press conference of the delegation of the Security Council, the Chilean Ambassador Cristian Barros Melet who co-chairs with Samantha Power, the US Ambassador the delegation asked about the request of the Government of Haiti replied "We do not have a specific idea. But now we try to maintain our support for the Haitian government with the aim the organization of elections with the characteristics already mentioned. It is too early to say if this is necessary to continue with the same configuration or not. We will have time for this. Not to mention that it is a complex process politically. But I assure you that we take this very seriously and that the Security Council is very attached to the situation in Haiti."

For her part, Samantha Power, emphasized the increase in Haitian police force https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-13011-haiti-security-graduation-ceremony-of-1-118-new-pnh-officers.html saying that "The National Police is the future of security in Haiti."
