Haiti - FLASH : DR will stop supplying Haiti in 3 days

In protest for the 60 trucks that were attacked and damaged with stones and looted by mobs in Haiti, the « Federación Nacional de Transporte Dominicano » (Fenatrado) will suspend as of Monday all traffic to Haiti in the absence of security for drivers and goods.

Thursday morning in a press conference, Blas Peralta, the President of the Fenatrado accompanied by several trade union leaders and drivers victims of attacks by Haitian, explained that during the holding of bilateral market in Jimani Friday 24 July, two Haitian fought with their machetes, another pulled out a gun and killed his compatriot and several Haitians took the body in Haiti and said he had been killed by the Dominicans.

Following this accusation, a crowd began to throw stones and broken vehicle windows, burned tires of 60 of our trucks and 20 of our comrades received blows and various injuries, some had to be admitted to the hospital of Jimani Melenciano. Individuals also stole the goods, cement, rebar, medicines, foods and fabrics for the free zones that these trucks carried in Haiti [...] these actions were committed between Friday and Sunday," indicated the President of the Fenetrado, adding that the damage to trucks amounted to over 100 million pesos, not including the theft of goods.

"With these acts of savagery, we took the decision until the Dominican and Haitian governments agree to respect the agreements [...] and that the Haitian government pays for damage to trucks as well as for stolen goods in Haiti, that no goods will be transported to Haiti [...] We regret having to take this unpleasant step, but until the Haitian and Dominican governments guarantee us

our properties and the lives of our drivers, no trucks will go to Haiti, we apologize to our customers who use our services and we hope that a rapid solution will be found to this problem."

Peralta recalled that every day 200 trucks carrying food and other goods, come into Haiti by affiliates to Fenatrado.
