Excerpt from the speech of Michel Martelly :
"[...] Haitians, my brothers and sisters,

On 17 October 1806, the Father of the Nation Jean-Jacques Dessalines was gunned down at his assassination here in Pont-Rouge.

Every time that date arrives we must always gather here to salute the memory of this man [...] there are people who have so marked their passage in the history of a country that these people can not die this is why for us, haitian Papa Dessalines is still alive, he is alive in the pride we have for the country [...] he is alive in our heart every time we repeat his name, he is alive in our consciousness each time we recognize him, if Dessalines had not been there, Haiti would not exist. He is alive in the choices we make every day, to land the vision had Dessalines for Haiti, in the reality of the life of every Haitian.

A united country, a strong country, a country where the right of everyone are respected, where democracy and social justice are established everywhere, a country where everyone is equal before the law, to the state, where everyone has the same opportunities, the same rights to build their future [...] a country where the will to succeed, brings everyone together [...] to move forward on the path of change, democracy and development.

These was the projet of Papa Dessalines.

And it is this project that we never managed to achieve so far.

If we do not walk in the footsteps of Dessalines, we will be forced to resign ourselves to face the consequences and if we continue to put us back our past, we can not build a future that will be good for us all.

Dessalines wanted we understand each other [...] that we live free in respect for one another with dignity, in a Haiti that is master of itself, a Haiti that made progress... a Haitian killed him for that.

The Emperor Dessalines came out of a disagreement, and if we look at our history, we understand that it is this kind of disagreement that we continue to reproduce in society, that makes today we are divided.

There are people who are claiming the paternity of Dessalines in order to settle their affairs, Dessalines that gave a country, who fought to bequeath us this piece of land for us all.

We reproduce a form of exclusion that has nothing to do with the ideal of Dessalines which is based on social justice, equal opportunities for all, including the poor without excluding the rich.

Dessalines is the Father of the Nation, so this is the Father of us all.

We should all follow his example and work to overcome it.

Haitians, my brothers and sisters,

Throughout my mandate [...] I have never stopped working to make efforts to Haiti has another image. Today it is with great pride that I invite you to see how the accomplishments of my administration, in all sectors, have made Haiti a beautiful country, more welcoming...

That's how I think you should all work, manifesting your gratitude and respect to the Father of the Nation and thank him for this beautiful country that hehas given us.

Similarly I I've invested a lot of effort for there to be greater social justice in the country, we believe that Dessalines would have done it if he had time, he would have sent all the children to school for free, it was his dream, he would have built schools, hospitals, roads, makes agricultural development, create industries, encourage investment and credit to open businesses to provide work for all in the country...

With over 4 years in power, I understood where Dessalines wanted to lead us, and he also learned me a lot about the direction we have to give the country to take off.

More than 4 years in power, also made me realize that as long as we will not come together, put our forces together to become one, we will not take the momentum for Haiti develops.

Over 4 years to promote people, the country showed me clearly how to move forward with what sector, what actor, and where, to build the country that Dessalines wanted for us. We need every Haitian contributes, but above all, it must show its willingness to sit down and work with the Haitian similar [...]

This is what the people want and that is what will make our country to be respected by all nations on earth.

Vive Papa Dessalines
Vive Haïti

Mèsi anpil"
