Haiti - Politics : Letter to the Nation of the Senator Dieudonne Luma Étienne
Senator Dieudonne Luma Etienne (North) elected under the banner of PHTK, the only woman in the Senate of the Republic, this week addressed the population in a letter to the Nation that we invite you to share :

Letter to the Nation of Senator Étienne :
"Honourable colleagues in Parliament,
Citizens, citizens,
Haitian,
Northerners,
Compatriots on all sides,

I would like to begin this letter with a great thank you to the Haitian people for their unconditional support for the promotion of democracy throughout the long electoral campaign. I am particularly grateful to the voters of the 19 communes in the North department who have mobilized, on the basis of their conviction, to choose my person, a woman, the only one to be teir representative in the Senate of the Republic. Already, I pledge to honor this trust in the respect of the Constitution, the determination and the search for the compromise essential to the advancement of the country.

Haitians, in 2017, we must start with a simple and obvious postulate: the future of Haiti is and must be in the hands of Haitians. In the history of this country, women have always been at the forefront of the highlights of our existence as a people. Like Claire Heureuse, Catherine Flon or Défilé "la Folle", I humbly wish, through this mandate, to place myself as a link between the different living forces of the Nation so that we finally work to the welfare of the Haitian people socially and economically.

Development depends on good governance, and that good governance is the ingredient that has always been lacking in recent decades. As parliamentary colleagues, we are at a time of great promise. As representatives of the people, let's engage to initiate daring, innovative and smart public policies that will enable young people who are bursting with energy, of talent and hope to build a better future.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's engage ourselves to work to ensure that the monitoring work entrusted to Parliament by the Constitution and the laws of the Republic is carried out effectively and efficiently.

Haitians, the proper functioning of the institutions in a competent, serious and transparent way is the key to success. A strong Parliament, an independent press, a balanced and active civil society, an honest police force, an independent and impartial judiciary and a vibrant private sector are essential to democratic life, but above all to the development of the country. Haiti needs strong men and strong women who must work in order to strengthen republican institutions.

Haitians, these senatorial elections from 2015 to 2016 gave me the opportunity to talk about tourism, entrepreneurship, agriculture, decentralization, infrastructure development, health and education for all and land security.

Thus, I pledge to work to ensure the involvement and commitment of women in the long-term development of the country in accordance with the spirit and letter of the 1987 Constitution, Article 17 -1. I therefore encourage all women to better exploit their managerial capacity to achieve the parity that the modern world preaches. 'Mwen p ap fè pwomès voye-monte !' On the other hand, it should be remembered that now, and during my term of office, the struggle for the fulfillment of my commitments - often rightly or wrongly translated into 'election promises' will be perpetual, pragmatic and very realistic.

Haitians, dear compatriots, you can count on my dynamism and my sense of civic responsibility for an intelligent application of the constitutional prerogatives which, by their content, tend towards the attainment of development objectives, the realization of the projects long awaited by our Haitian taxpayers. Knowing that we are at a crossroads where we have to take difficult and painful decisions, if we want a better tomorrow for this country, its daughters and sons.

Moreover, I am far from forgetting the victims of last November's flood in the North and the North-East, as well as the victims of the Great South and North-West of the devastating hurricane of the month of October whose after-effects are still being felt. The union will always be our strength to move this chain of mountains erected by Hurricane Matthew.

I will end my remarks by thanking Heaven for keeping me and accompanying me in this political battle. To my family, my supporters, to you, dear voters, for the support you have not failed to give me - I say THANK YOU! Thank you, finally, to the Haitian Party tèt kale (PHTK) which provided me with the necessary framework, without which the political struggle would be strewn with more difficulties !

Citizens, Haitians, Northerners, compatriots on all sides, the opportunity will not come from elsewhere. It will come from the decisions you take, the positive actions you will lead from the hope you will have in your heart.

Let us unite under the sun of a rich and prosperous Haiti!
May God bless the Haitian people !"
