Haiti - Politic : Signature of an anti-corruption memorandum 29/04/2018 08:57:26 The Primature, the Haitian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Private Sector Economic Forum and the Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC) were the main speakers in this debate which aimed to identify viable solutions to eradicate the scourge of corruption. Several topics of major interest, such as compliance measures to prevent corruption in the private sector and smuggling issues, allowed participants to articulate their concerns and make recommendations in a memorandum of understanding that should help take effective action against corruption. For Major David Basile, Director General of the ULCC "Contraband is a global scourge with multiple implications that affects the national economy: not only does it lead to losses of tens of billions of gourdes a year, but it feeds traffic and represents in itself a criminal activity that can accompany others. The criminal networks that are being set up can thus contribute to the financing of terrorism and the trafficking of arms. Today, at ULCC we consider smuggling as part of a larger whole, which is why we want to involve the whole society in this process." For Moïse "This approach postulates that all together, we realized that we can not continue to do anything with impunity. It supposes a supplement of soul which calls us to our responsibilities, of each and everyone individually, in front of the deterioration of the general conditions of life of the population. It is based essentially on frank and sincere dialogue, which presupposes the common will to reach a solution acceptable to all parties that allows them to progress together for the good of the community, all as much as we are [...] I congratulate the ULCC and representatives of CCIH, the Haiti Industries Association and the Private Sector Economic Forum for taking the initiative to sign an anti-corruption memorandum today."
