Haiti - Religion : Mgr Pierre André Dumas calls for tolerance

"Religions for Peace" celebrates the first anniversary of its founding [in March 2010]. During a press conference, Mgr Pierre André Dumas, Coordinator of the Inter Religious Association "Religions for Peace" has called the followers of all religious denominations to tolerance and participation for the transformation of the country.

He indicated that the discourse of tolerance, systematically conveyed by "Religions for Peace" since one year, plays an important role in the reconstruction of the country. Mgr Dumas acknowledges that the work already done, is just a drop in the ocean, that is why, he appealed for solidarity to give a new direction to Haiti. A position shared by the Rev. Ogé Beauvoir representative of the Episcopal Church of Haiti and the Imam Abou Jahman of the Muslim community of Haiti. According to them, "it is imperative that the Haitians cultivate and practice the tolerance to be able to rebuild together and for all the country."

Mgr Pierre André Dumas has recalled that it is in this context that the organization "Religions for Peace" was positioned when the followers of the voodoo were targeted by individuals who accused them of spreading cholera by practices black magic, causing the lynching of dozens of followers of the voodoo. "We condemn these killings perpetrated against adherents of the voodoo and this must not happen again"

"We are in solidarity with brothers and sisters of the voodoo. The death of a man is the death of all humanity," said the Rev. father Ogé Beauvoir.

Euvonie George Augustin, a great servant to the Confederation of voodoo and representative of the voodoo within "Religions for Peace", explained that these attitudes "are the result of a lack of civic and religious education". For her, the intolerance is a major source of violent behavior and calls on all Haitians to unite to change society, adding that "the next government must be able to rely on the participation of all sectors of the national life to be able to transform its campaign promises into reality."
