Haiti - Agriculture : Perspectives on food security (October 2021- May 2022)
In its bulletin on Haiti FEWS NET, (Perpsective October 2021 to May 2022) the international famine early warning network reports that socio-political instability accentuates the food aid needs in Haiti already high after the earthquake of August 14.

Extract from the report :

[...] The security climate has deteriorated since the beginning of September. Criminal activity and kidnappings for ransom have intensified. This, added to the persistent scarcity of fuel, has pushed the population to adopt days of strike resulting in the paralysis of economic activities, mainly in the big cities, resulting in the disruption of public transport, warehouses, businesses and schools.

[...] The irregularity in the spatio-temporal distribution of the rains, the residual effects of the earthquake and the tropical depression Grace on agricultural production respectively in the South, Grand'Anse, Nippes and the South-East, are characterized by through the loss of productive assets, including inputs, among others, limit the performance of the fall agricultural season.

[...] The Gourde / dollar exchange rate [98.81 Gourdes for $ 1] continues to depreciate, amplifying the volatility of household purchasing power. The prices of imported food products, strongly correlated with the informal market exchange rate, remain significantly above average.

[…] The areas affected by the earthquake (South, Nippes, Grand 'Anse) and the Grace tropical depression (South-East), those where harvests will be below average (North-West, North-East, Haut-Plateau, Haut-Artibonite, West), and Port-au-Prince, under the influence of gangs, will be in Crisis (IPC Phase 3), households still forced to adopt crisis strategies (consumption of early harvests or seeds, sale of wood, reduction in the quality and/or quantity of meals, etc.) to maintain their food consumption. In some areas such as Camp Perrin, Maniche, and Pestel, food assistance will enable poor households to meet their food needs; they are then in Stress (IPC Phase 2).
