Haiti - FLASH : 1 out of 2 children will depend on humanitarian aid to survive in 2023
In a context of growing armed violence in Haiti, at least 2.6 million children are expected to need immediate life-saving assistance in 2023, warns UNICEF.

Over the past two years, the number of Haitian children in need of humanitarian assistance has increased by half a million as an upsurge in armed violence, a resurgence of cholera, combined with food insecurity and soaring inflation have restricted access to essential health, nutrition, water and sanitation, and education services for millions of children and their families.

"This is one of the most difficult times to be a child in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, and it is getting worse every day [...] Without additional emergency assistance, their humanitarian situation is likely to deteriorate. deteriorate further in the coming months," said Dr. Garry Conille, UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

UNICEF recalls that the current crisis in Haiti affects the right of children to protection and education. Most schools in Haiti were closed for seven months last year. Violence also has a significant impact on the lives of children, especially in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, where an estimated 1.2 million children are at risk of violence.

The cholera epidemic takes a disproportionate heavy toll on children, as children under 10 account for 33% of confirmed cases, In Cité Soleil, up to 8,000 children under 5 are at risk of dying from acute malnutrition or cholera unless urgent action is taken to contain these threats.

Despite an extremely unstable and hostile environment, while humanitarian access to children in need remains a challenge, UNICEF teams on the ground manage to penetrate gang-controlled areas and distribute life-saving aid to families the most vulnerable.

Last year, UNICEF helped the Haitian authorities provide basic services to children and their families, including water, sanitation and hygiene, education, health, nutrition , child protection and social protection:

  • More than 646,000 people had access to sufficient drinking water for drinking and domestic needs.
  • Over 323,000 children aged 6-59 months were screened for wasting and over 12,600 children with severe acute malnutrition were admitted for treatment.
  • Nearly 480,000 children and women received essential health services in UNICEF-supported facilities.
  • About 170,000 children under the age of one have been vaccinated against measles.
  • More than 132,000 children received educational materials.
  • About 68,000 women, girls and boys have benefited from gender-based violence prevention and response measures.
  • 25 non-formal education centers were supported.
  • Over 1,200 vulnerable households with school-aged children received multipurpose cash transfers.

Last year, UNICEF's humanitarian response in Haiti received only about 40% of the required funding. UNICEF calls on the international community to urgently increase financial support for the humanitarian response in Haiti is UNICEF's most underfunded emergency operation in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Without rapid and flexible support from international donors to respond to the growing humanitarian crisis, UNICEF and its partners will not be able to meet the humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable children in Haiti.

Let's recall that last December the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator indicated that 5 countries were experiencing famine situations: Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37889-haiti-health-for-the-first-time-famine-is-in-haiti.html , Somalia and South Sudan.
