Haiti - Social : Improvement of living conditions of prisoners at the National Penitentiary
Thursday, February 28, as part of the improvement of precarious living conditions of prisoners at the National Penitentiary, Rose Anne Auguste, the Minister Delegate in Charge of Human Rights and the Fight against Poverty Extreme, proceeded to the distribution of 3,000 mattresses, 3,000 pairs of sheets, hygiene kits 3.750 [soap, toothpaste, detergent, deodorant and toilet paper] and 3.750 plates, cups and spoons, to inmates of the largest prison Centre of Haiti.

The Minister Rose Anne Auguste argued that this important distribution in favor of detainees took place within the framework of a vast operation implemented by the Administration Martelley-Lamothe, aimed at providing the main country's prisons of materials meeting the urgent need formulated by the Directorate of Prison Administration.

This distribution at the National Penitentiary was carried out in collaboration with various responsible, staff and social workers. The Office of the Minister also took the opportunity to deliver a batch of 500 pairs of sandals, 500 jerseys and shorts to inmates facing the harshest conditions.

Inmates who have welcomed this distribution thanked the initiators of this operation, which responds to the urgency of their daily problems.

The Minister Auguste recalled that National Penitentiary distribution is not a first. The civil prison of Pétion Ville for women has already received several batches of material https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-7835-haiti-social-improvement-of-the-conditions-of-detention-in-the-prison-of-petion-ville.html

Distribution activities are also planned during the month of March in the prisons of St. Marc, Gonaives, Cap Haitien, Grande Rivière du Nord and Fort Liberté.

In addition, the Minister informed that in parallel with this operation and the rehabilitation activities, painting workshops, of writing and theater, are conducted by its Office in the prisons, actions are also identified at the government level to address the structural problems related to the judicial system and the prison administration, including that of prolonged pretrial detention, registration and implementation of the computerized files of prisoners and the prison overcrowding.
