Haiti - Social : Haiti is at a critical juncture...
During the CXIIIe Ordinary Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Haiti, the religious leaders after having had the opportunity to welcome different actors of national life have all recognized that due to the situation in the country, Haiti was at a critical juncture. After having appealed to the different actors in our society, they say they are willing to facilitate a space for dialogue and cooperation for the solution to problems is not sought in the streets or outside our borders...

Note of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti :
"During our CXIIIe Regular meeting held from 23 to 27 September 2013, us, the Catholic Bishops of Haiti have had the opportunity to welcome different actors of the national life. Despite the difficulties the country is facing, we had the satisfaction of discovering how each of them carries in the depths of their heart and in its projects a great love for the country.

Moreover, they all agreed that Haiti is at a critical juncture : political instability threats, stake of democratic achievements, administrative mismanagement and widespread corruption, deterioration of the quality of life for the vast majority of our citizens, lack of involvement of key sectors of national life, especially in the areas of health, the school and university education, vocational training, job creation and growth in domestic production. Each group is aware of its inability to resolve alone the fundamental problems such as the cost of living, unemployment, social and food insecurity, environmental degradation.

We are, indeed, before a special situation that requires exceptional measures and a large transcendence from the main actors of the political class and civil society. Are you not unanimous in believing that we must find a Haitian solution, collaborative and consensual to the current crisis related, particularly in the electoral issue and the specter of failure of the Senate ?

It is urgent to recognize that if we do not put in the foreground the common good and the best interests of the nation, if there is no change in the attitudes and political behavior, the country will go straight to a catastrophe that will transform all stakeholders in losers and poor in poorer.

The holders of the various established powers of the State must demonstrate serenity, wisdom to lead in an open dialogue, to a compromise, however it can be expensive. No sector, indeed, can claim to be the repository of all power, of all the legitimacy to the point of wanting disqualified the advance of another group. Nobody has a monopoly on right and truth.

As we approach 2014, the first decade of the bicentenary of independence, we call all the girls and all the son of the country to show magnanimity, patriotism and civic facing the nation and the world, by refusing the paths of discord, intimidation and violence. Us, the Catholic Bishops of Haiti, asking, among other things :

At the Executive, the guarantor of smooth running of the institutions, to create the conditions necessary for democratic governance and take adequate means to avoid the country an institutional vacuum ;

To the Legislative Body, to fulfill the mission entrusted by the people to vote the laws favorable to the development of the country, to remain attentive and committed to the needs of constituents, to take responsibility for the stability of the country and its institutions ;

To Political parties, to be open to dialogue and to foster discussions that will lead to a political consensus ;

To the civil society to contribute to the implementation of mechanisms to create synergy between different actors in the search for lasting solutions to the crisis ;

To all citizens, to only seek what contributes to the construction and to the democratic progress of the country.

As for us, Catholic Bishops of Haiti, we are willing to facilitate a space for dialogue and cooperation so that the solution to our problems is not sought primarily in the streets or outside our borders. Haitians need that their lmeaders inspire confidence and show their love of the country in the consequent decisions that promote harmony throughout the country. Unemployed people at work and students need to go to school. All need peace and bread. That is why we are committed at the same time to continue our course with the people who are suffering and which hope for a better future.

Open our hearts and let us join hands for a true, sincere and constructive dialogue. Thus, 2014 will be an opportunity to strengthen democratic institutions, the result of credible elections. All this will contribute to the normalization of the social, economic and political life of the country.

Our prayers and blessings are with you all under the gaze of Christ, 'in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility' Ephesians 2:14."
