Haiti - Reconstruction : Rehabilitation of the Champ-de-Mars

The rehabilitation of the Champ-de-Mars, the largest public square in Port-au-Prince, will begin in January and should be completed in June 2014, if there is no setback.

According to the engineer Clément Bélizaire of the Unit for Housing Construction and of Public Buildings (ULCBP), the main monuments and elements of Champ-de-Mars, will keep their positions; ; the places Christophe, Dessalines and of the Constitution, will be merged to form one large park. All the decorative elements, street furniture and lighting will be standardized, the fountain of the Place Dessalines will be conserved ; the garden areas will be maintained and upgraded. The kiosk Occide Jeanty will be transformed into open-air amphitheater with a capacity of 5,000 seats with an esplanade of 2,000 standing places, works financed by the Treasury and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

The Liberty Avenue will be transformed with pedestrian pathways and spaces for kiosks, which will be given in concession for the sale of handicrafts. Kiosks will also be built on the place of artists, whose the renovation work have already begun to offer spaces to restaurants.

The Place Pétion will also be redeveloped and will retain its recreational vocation for children ; a basketball/volleyball field nd ramps to facilitate the practice of skateboarding and BMX will be achieved.

The firm that has developed the rehabilitation plans of most of the Champ-de-Mars was selected by tender. The Canadian firm IBI/DAA was chosen for the amphitheater and 8 other places for the account of the UCLBP. Two architects and a firm have worked on the master plan ; Gilbert Chenet for the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien (MUPANAH) and Evelyne Craan, for the Ministry of Tourism for the Place of Artists.
