Haiti - Education : School Feeding program, expanded in the Deep South

The National School Feeding Programme (PNCS), with the support of the World Food Programme (WFP), extends its coverage to departments of Nippes and Grande Anse, two departments where it was previously absent. This pilot project is part of the memorandum signed in December 2012 between WFP and the Government to provide the country with a national school feeding program, by 2030. This project sees for the first time, the PNCS implement directly a school feeding program.

Launched at the 013-2014 school year, in 8 schools of Nippes and Grande Anse, the project has expanded to cover 73 additional schools from December 2013. The objective is to reach a total of 24.347 children in basic education (1st to 9th year) in public schools in the areas most affected by food insecurity.

By the end of the year, the PNCS, accompanied by WFP should strengthen its capacity to implement to cover 4,366 additional students in Nippes.

This pilot project is also an opportunity to strengthen the links between the school canteen and local agricultural production. Rice distributed through this program : 526 tonnes produced locally and purchased via the small producer organizations. This project also aims to support and strengthen the decentralization of the PNCS at departmental level. WFP has facilitated the installation of an antenna of NCS in the department of Nippes and trained, at the decentralized level, the monitoring agents of PNCS to strengthen their capacity for implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the program.
