Haiti - Politic : Strengthening of local authorities
Within the overall framework of the support of the European Union (EU) to the decentralization and strengthening of non-state actors and local authorities in Haiti [Support Programme for governance and local investment (AGIL) and of Non-State Actors and Local Authorities Programme (NSA-LA)], EU-funded to the tune of € 8.5 million, the "Groupe d'Actions Francophones" (GAFE) and the EU delegation in Haiti, conducted this week, the first Workshop, of actors of decentralized cooperation in Haiti.

This workshop aimed on the one hand to help the actors to define common strategies to strengthen Haitian local authorities to make it credible and reliable interlocutors of the state and secondly, allow to define a program concerted between the actors of the decentralized cooperation.

On the occasion of the opening of the workshop, Javier Nino Perez, Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union in Haiti declared "Capacity building of local authorities remains essential to the pulse of development issued fro mthe base and anchored in the local socio-economic reality. The results of this sharing of experiences, favored by this workshop between different actors of the Haitian local governance ultimately contribute to strengthening the role of local authorities in the design and implementation of development policies."

According to the organizers, through this dynamic of exchange, discussion and sharing of experiences, the workshop proved to be a good tool to support communities by promoting greater transparency of their functioning and efficiency in their work.
