According to Major General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, during the first two months of this year, the Dominican Army prevented in various parts of the border area, the illegal entry into the Dominican Republic, of 8,500 Haitian nationals, a number that it described as "unprecedented".

While stressing that January and February have always been months of intense traffic of people, who take advantage of return of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic, who have passed the festive season with their families in Haiti, the Dominican General said that since last year, the Dominican Republic had noted a significant increase in the number Haitians, who tried to emigrate illegally for the first time.

Major General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, explained that the interceptions were obtained through a significant increase in border patrols, the sending of a Task Force institutional every 15 days at the border of the two countryand the intensification of work done by intelligence Directorate G-2. Recalling that in 2013, 52,000 Haitian nationals trying to enter illegally through the border, had been returned to Haiti "while this number was only about 20,000 in 2012..."
