Haiti - Health : Establishment of a Universal Health Insurance Card

Wednesday at the Primature, Max Saint-Albin, Director of the Office of Workers' Compensation Insurance, Sickness and Maternity (OFATMA), has presented and announced the establishment of a universal health insurance card in Haiti.

"...Today we are at the Primature, to present to the Prime Minister, His Excellency Laurent Lamothe, the program of Social Security health of the OFATMA which, as you know, was a campaign promise of the President of the country, had made during his campaign. He spoke of health for all Haitians, regardless of their economic status, male or female, big or small that when you have a health problem, you can get care.

Today, we are at the materialization of this project, we are going to land this project. We'll start with the organized sectors, particularly in the Public Service sector where we will start gradually and I can tell you that by the end of the year or at the latest early next year, all the agents of the public service will be in this program.

This insurance will cover of course the formal labor sector but also the informal sector. In the formal sector, I spoke of public servants but

this also concerns the private sector. We will also arrive in the informal sector, so that eventually, to the 2017-2018 horizon, each Haitians can be the holder of this health insurance card and be covered in case of any health problem [...]"
