Haiti - Security : Harmonization of Departmental Contingency Plans

This week, less than two months from the beginning of the hurricane season 2014 (average ranked in the Atlantic Ocean), the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) of the Ministry of Interior and Territorial Communities, organized a workshop of harmonization of departmental contingency plans and sectorial for natural hazards of hydrometeorological origin.

The Permanent Secretariat of Risk Management, the 10 departmental Technical Coordinators, executives of the DPC, support projects to this Directorate and the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) took part in this two-day workshop, led by two international experts.

"The harmonization and update of contingency plans should enable Civil Protection structures across the country to better anticipate and be more equipped to provide effective and coordinated response [...]" said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, Director of DPC, which opened the workshop.

At the end of this workshop, departmental Technical Coordinators will proceed to the update and improvement of contingency plans for their respective departments. Among other activities, a dozen simulation exercises, on among other the communication and data collection, are also provided.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has provided a support to the DPC for the realization of this workshop and reiterated and will remain alongside the structures of Civil Protection in Haiti, at all levels, in the various preparatory activities of the next season at risk.
