Haiti - Health : New Lab for the Study and Control of TB

On Wednesday, the University of Florida (Gainesville-Florida)opened to the west of Port-au-Prince a new national scientific laboratory at the cutting edge of technology built at a cost of 150,000 U.S. dollars...

"This new Lab will allow researchers to better understand and combat tuberculosis (TB) and graduate students from outside to come and train Haitian technicians who can then work in the lab," explained Dr. Michael Lauzardo, division chief of Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at the University of Florida.

Recall that Haiti has only 3 laboratories dedicated to the fight against tuberculosis and others are required. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention of diseases in the United States, say that Haiti has the highest infection rate of tuberculosis throughout the Western Hemisphere and that nearly 40% of people infected with the disease do not have been diagnosed. According to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) 296 people out of 1000, suffering from the disease in Haiti.
