Haiti - Economy : Creation of a craft villages and support for entrepreneurship 07/06/2014 12:20:34
Michaëlle Jean, the UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti, will perform a mission in Haiti, from 8 to 13 June, on the valuation and development of craft trades and support for entrepreneurship. During her stay Ms. Jean will meet with Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Industries, about the implementation in several regions of the country, of craft villages. These villages of creation will attract not only tourists educed by the beauty and originality of Haitian products, but they will become to the surrounding communities of business centers for the sale and purchase of goods and services. Theyy will also provide training spaces for citizens wishing to acquire new skills and become better entrepreneurs. "The craft villages will become prime destination for both visitors attracted by the discovery of authentic local products than for the populations who want to show their expertise and grow to develop new production niches," declared Ms. Jean. The Special Envoy will be joined in Port-au-Prince by Joseph Helmer, Canadian designer of international renown, of Haitian origin, based in Montreal who attended 16 schools of fashion and art trades in Haiti, Canada and France. Helmer Joseph has great ambitions for Haitian artisans whose he knows the talent and expertise. He wishes to accompany and mentor them, so that they can one day be recognized internationally for the quality of their products. Convinced that the accessories, supplies fashion, embroidery, lace and knitwear made in Haiti through mentoring of major master craftsmen, could be purchased by the haute couture houses such as Chanel, Vuitton and Dior, maison with which he worked and maintained links. Moreover, Michaëlle Jean will also meet with Wilson Laleau, Minister of Commerce and Industry, on the establishment of a Centre of Entrepreneurship at Henri Christophe campus of the State University of Haiti in Limonade that would participate in the economic and social development of the North and would have an impact on the entire country.
