Haiti - Education : Victims of strikes, students said they are badly prepared for State exams
As part of a tour of public schools, aimed at measuring in particular the effect of teachers' strikes on learning, the urgency to upgrade the teaching profession and the need to generalize the new secondary Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of Education, accompanied among others by Jackson Pléteau, Director of Secondary Education, visited last week the Lycée Henry Christophe of Carrefour, where students did not hide their concerns in relation to official exams after losing several weeks of class.

The Minister urged the departmental directors to organize special sessions to allow students of public schools and lycées to catch up lost time.

Kevens Pierre, a student of philosophy and Spokesperson of more than one hundred students declared firmly to the Minister "We're not ready for exams, because our teachers will fail to ends their programs even if they put the overdrive to enable us to catch up [...] Because of the teachers' strike, we lost more than a month of work and we could not cover every concepts in biology and probability."

When asked whether they have an idea of the program that their teachers should cover, the students responded fairly evasive "In history we have already studied Dessalines and Petion, but we have not even discussed the chapter on Soulouque."

Very poorly informed about the implications of the new secondary, the students of the 9th fundamental year took the opportunity to learn a little more, thanks to the intervention of Jackson Pléteau who spoke about the gradual replacement of traditional secondary with specific options and educational sector. "The new secondary is another school with another model of pedagogy that helps students organize their knowledge."

Aware of the problems raised by the students, the Minister said that the government understood the reality of public education institutions. That's why he worked hard to find an agreement with the teachers' unions and improve the status of teachers. While recognizing that students carry out their studies in difficult conditions, he encouraged them to take their education seriously, reminding them that they are the future of the country.

Before ending his visit, the Minister Manigat praised the dedication of the teaching staff, which organizes remedial sessions for the students, who must believe that success in state examinations is at their hand...
