Haiti - Diplomacy : The President Martelly hails the abdication of the King of Spain, Juan Carlos
In a statement, President Michel Martelly hails the abdication of Spanish King Juan Carlos and wish success to his successor, King Philippe VI.

"The President of the Republic, HE Mr. Michel Joseph Martelly, applauds the decision of His Majesty the King of Spain to abdicate in favor of his son Philip, Prince of Asturias.

Haiti values especially the role played by King Juan Carlos in the process of transition to democracy in Spain after the dictatorship as well as the leadership he has demonstrated throughout recent years in the consolidation of its democracy.

It is particularly important for my people and me to recognize the influence that had King Juan Carlos in strengthening relations between Spain and the countries of Latin America, including Haiti and its role in the approximation of our countries with the European Union, via Spain.

My people and I hail the Queen Sofia who was instrumental in the relations between Haiti and Spain. Her travels in Haiti have linked a little more the Crown and people of Spain to the Haitian people."
