Haiti - Security : Training in destruction of weapons and ammunition

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) conducted a three-day awareness training course as part of the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH) concerted efforts in support of the Haitian National Police (PNH).

The training in armoury management, weapons cutting and destruction of small arms ammunition is an integral aspect of the UNMAS pilot project within MINUSTAH, and was implemented in coordination with the United Nations Police (UNPOL) and PNH in their activities and development plan objectives.

This training course for 22 police officers (17 PNH and 5 UNPOL officers), took place at the Haitian Police Academy. The course consisted of both theoretical and hands-on practical training elements. "The participants were instructed in how to permanently dispose of obsolete light weapons and small arms ammunition using a circular saw and combustion disposals. They used in this regards, 25 obsoletes pistols, shotguns and rifles and 150kg of 38mn ammunition seized by PNH [...] The course also included lessons on international standards in armoury management, weapons and ammunition security, physical and non-physical security measures, weapons accountability and safety procedures," indicated Nick Bray, UNMAS officer in charge of the training. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11467-haiti-security-destruction-of-obsolete-weapons-and-ammunition.html

Other components of this project include construction and refurbishment of three armouries in Port-au-Prince and baseline assessments of capacity and requirements related to small arms management and security across other regions of Haiti.
