Haiti - Economy : The World Bank comes to discuss the Government's priorities

Monday, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, World Bank Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, ogether with Jorge Familiar, the new Vice President, Latin America and Caribbean, will lead a delegation to Haiti for a three-day mission.

Sri Mulyani Indrawati will meet members of Government to discuss priorities of the government action and the continued support of the Bank to long-term efforts, by the country to reduce poverty and create opportunities for all Haitians.

Indrawati will also visit several projects, including a Bank-financed program that has helped more than 50,000 displaced people to find housing by providing rent subsidies and by redesigning infrastructure in the neighborhoods of return. She will go in the South department to visit a project of subsidies to farmers, allowing them to finance services of plowing, the purchase of fertilizers and pesticides and to benefit from training. The tour will ends with a rural project of sustainable water supply.

Recall that the current portfolio of the World Bank in Haiti rises to more than $787 million, including $278 million disbursed and includes 16 projects. These projects are intended to finance infrastructure and services in the short and medium term, while contributing to build the foundation for growth, strengthening administrative capacity and strengthen Haitian institutions.

Some examples of actions of the World Bank Group in Haiti :

  • Last year, the Bank has financed the education of 200,000 schoolchildren, 80,000 daily meals for students and subsidies to 2,824 schools ;

  • Allocated rent subsidies to more than 50,000 people to help them leave the camps and resettle in safer housing ;

  • Contributed to improving the lives of 300,000 people in redeveloping neighborhoods (widening roads, improving street lighting and consolidation gullies) and rebuilt or renovated housing for 85,000 people ;

  • Supported training in the treatment and prevention of cholera that affected more than 3 million people ;

  • Funded antenatal and postnatal care for nearly 500,000 pregnant women and health care services for 1.5 million children under five years ;

  • Projects of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have provided 10,000 jobs, including for 4,000 women ;

  • E-Power C power plant has increased the production capacity of electricity in Port-au-Prince by 35%.
