Haiti - Diplomacy : 85 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Haiti
Friday, Foreign Minister José Antonio Meade, received a courtesy visit of the Ambassador of Haiti to Mexico, Guy Lamothe, to mark the 85th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Haiti.

At the meeting, both men stressed the good diplomatic relations and mentioned the three formal meetings that had the Presidents of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto and of Haiti, Michel Martelly, in the last 18 months.

Chancellor Meade reiterated Mexico's commitment to continue supporting the country in the process of rebuilding its infrastructure and said that Mexico will continue to develop cooperation in the fields of public health, infrastructure, education and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

For his part, Ambassador Guy Lamothe stressed the high degree of understanding between the two nations and recognized the impetus given by Mexico for the development in Haiti.

Moreover, the two officials indicated that as part of the 85th anniversary of diplomatic relations, will be held in Port-au-Prince the 2nd meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on September 9, an ideal space to discuss of bilateral priority themes, such as: trade, investment, tourism and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

A little history :
It is in 1816 that General Francisco Javier Mina made a trip to Haiti to seek the support of the country in the quest for the independence of Mexico. Although the initial rapprochement between the two countries began in the nineteenth century, it was not until July 11, 1929, that the diplomatic relations were formalized between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Genaro Estrada and Haiti, Camille Léon.

In 1934, the Mexican Government has appointed José Gil Perez y Ortiz as extraordinary and plenipotentiary representatives of Mexico in Haiti. This diplomatic mission was elevated to the rank of Embassy December 18, 1945, with José Angel Ceniceros, as the first Ambassador of Mexico. In return, Haiti has appointed the same year, Jacques Antoine, the first Ambassador of Haiti in Mexico.
