Haiti - Health : Impressive results for the Ministry of Health

Friday at the National Palace, President Michel Martelly and his wife Sophia Martelly, attended with different partners of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) involved in the health sector in Haiti, to the presentation of achievements of the ministry.

In her presentation, Dr. Florence D. Guillaume, the Minister of Health, highlighted the significant progress made in the health system over the past three years. With the support of its partners, the government was able to build 4 hospitals, 32 health centers, 34 treatment units of acute diarrhea and 11 other health facilities across the country.

In addition, 20 hospitals, 56 health centers and clinics (including 15 being finalized), 9 specialized centers, 4 other structures (laboratories and sanatorium) were rehabilitated under the Administration Martelly, while 5 hospitals and 17 Health centers are under construction, said the Minister Guillaume.

With respect to the provision of care and health services, the Minister reported the development of various programs to improve the quality of care in the country. She also welcomed the results achieved in the fight against transmissible diseases, including AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and filariasis. A net reduction of maternal and infant mortality has been observed and a family planning campaign was launched. Ambulance services, land, sea and helicopter are now available to the public.

The Minister welcomed the commitment of the First Lady, Sophia Martelly, for whom health care is a priority.

For his part, the Head of State reiterated his commitment to expanding health infrastructure in the country, convinced that every citizen, wherever he is in Haiti and whatever its status, should receive health care of quality.
