Haiti - Education: Towards a stronger partnership between Haiti and Finland

Wednesday Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of Education, signed at the Ritz Kinam, a cooperation agreement with his counterpart from Finland, Krista Kiuru, to launch a new partnership for quality education. This cooperation agreement focus, inter alia on teacher training and curriculum reform.

As part of an international conference on quality of education, a Finnish delegation of education experts composed of 14 members and top executives of MENFP, Finnish education experts, senior officials of the Ministry, including the Director Deputy Ecclésiaste Telemaque, Jacky Lumarque, Rector of the University Quisqueya, as well as technical directors, technical and financial partners, gathered Wednesday to reflect on the best strategy to improve the Haitian education system.

This initiative follows exchanges between the two ministries in July, in a first technical mission from Finland in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11542-haiti-education-towards-a-reinforced-cooperation-with-finland.html It was to identify in this phase, new areas of cooperation between the two countries. The teacher training and curriculum reform then were among the new areas of cooperation identified.

Finland intends, according to Minister Kiuru, provide support for Haitian education in a frank and sincere bilateral cooperation. Making a historical overview of the education system in Finland that has not always been to the optimum level it is today, Ms Kiuru stressed the main vector of the quality of education: teacher training. According to her, to have a quality education system, it must be provided with competent and qualified teachers.

Echoing these, the Minister Manigat emphasized the quality of education, that must necessarily pass through the competence and qualification of teachers stating that "This search query to improve the quality of education continues, was a major concern of his administration," adding "We are currently developing with UNESCO, a strategy to allow our 27,000 public school teachers and about a hundred thousand in the private sector, of being real useful" wishing also that the Finnish cooperation, is based on technical and scientific assistance.
