Haiti - Security : New measures of the PNH, to fight against insecurity

With one policeman for every 1,000 inhabitants, while the international standard is 1 for 200, Godson Orélus the Director General of the National Police of Haiti, this week announced a series of measures that will allow its staff to be more effective in the fight against insecurity and banditry.

He announced that new surveillance cameras will be installed in strategic locations in the metropolitan area. The agents of the Motorized Intervention Brigade, will be permanently deployed in downtown Port-au-Prince, so that small merchants can go about their business safely.

Moreover, from October fifty new police vehicles will patrol the main roads, Petion Ville, Delmas and the city center. The presence of these patrols composed of two police officers, will help deter acts of banditry. He also confirmed that the number 114 for the population will be put into operation shortly.

Godson Orélus also indicated that the police officers will be equipped with new means of communication secured thanks to a new system that will be implemented.

Godson Orélus explained that for lack of resources, such measures can not currently be deployed in the provinces, however, he said that a Special Response Plan, was to be set up in the South, ensuring that it's a priority for him and that he was currently seeking the necessary resources.
