Haiti - Ebola : PAHO/WHO concerned about the false rumors in Haiti 19/10/2014 09:37:39
Although the risk of introduction of Ebola in Haiti remains low, the Representation of the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), recalls that if it is essential that the health system in Haiti is preparing for all eventualities, one of the first lines of defense against any health problem is information. PAHO/WHO state in a note "It is worrying to see the growing number of unfounded rumors, which suggests that the virus of the disease Ebola is in Haiti. These rumors are likely to make taking bad decisions, or even cause panic movements without cause in the population. PAHO/WHO urge the press and population to exercise caution, including health workers, noting that the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) and partners are mobilized to prepare for all eventualities." PAHO/WHO is closely monitoring the situation with the MSPP in the development of a contingency plan in case the country would have to face this disease and develop procedures for the management of suspected cases, in consultation with all relevant organizations internationally. Training sessions are organized to destinations of target groups (media, immigration staff, health workers) and information campaigns will be disseminated to prepare the population. In conclusion, PAHO/WHO "urges the population to follow information from official bodies and do not spread rumors and avoid any form of discrimination." HL/ HaitiLibre
