Haiti - Politic : Haiti and TCI finalized a MoU
A delegation of Turkish and Caicos Islands (TCI) recently traveled to Port-au-Prince at the invitation of the Haitian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation composed of the Governor Peter Beckingham, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of border control and Labour, Clara Gardiner, and Deputy Commander (Marine Division) the Inspector Warrican was in the country to finalize the long-awaited document on migration https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12330-haiti-politic-soon-signing-of-an-agreement-with-the-tci-on-illegal-migration.html between the countries and discuss issues of common interest with the Haitian Government and other officials in Port-au-Prince.

"I am pleased to say that the Haitian Government have agreed the final text of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)," the governor said.

"This will be signed by representatives of the two Governments, after which we will release the text, and it will cover economic ties as well as illegal migration and people-to-people links."

He warned that the MoU will not change suddenly the relationship, nor immediately reduce illegal migration.

He said that this is an indication of the seriousness with which the two governments see the growing relationship.

The Delegation of the TCI also held talks with ambassadors of the European Union, of the Bahamas, the United States and Canada, the heads of the UN mission in Haiti and the International Organization for Migration then it was in Haiti.

ommenting on these discussions, Beckingham noted "There are a certain number of other possible initiatives stemming from our visit, including the registration of Haitians in the TCI, which I am sure will help our countries to work more closely and effectively with Haiti and key regional actors."

"Everyone we met recognized the importance of TCI, despite our small population in the nexus of opportunities and problems in the relationship with Haiti."
