Haiti - Social : Haitians attacked the Dominican Consulate in Ouanaminthe

Monday in Ouanaminthe, protesters continued to require the connection of the city to the grid of Caracol. Violent clashes took place with the police, who were trying to restore order with tear gas, under the jets of stones and bottles. Many shots were heard and are reported several injured, some serious. The city was completely paralyzed and vandalism have caused extensive damage.

In addition to social upheaval of extreme violence, a group of people threw stones at the Dominican Consulate. The Vice-Consul Marciano Mateo Espinosa told reporters that, for security reasons, Consulate staff had been evacuated and repatriated in Dominican territory.

This movement of anger against the Dominican Consulate, follows Sunday's incident where Carlos de León, a Dominican truck driver injured by stone by Haitian protesters, had lost control of his truck before hitting a house and caused the death of a 6 year old girl. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12629-haiti-security-new-incident-the-tension-increases-at-the-border.html Protesters having learned Monday that the driver was transferred Monday in the Dominican Republic to receive treatment, following an agreement with the National Police of Haiti, they feared that he escapes the Haitian justice.

Hugo Charles, the Departmental Delegate of the Northeast, has launched an appeal for calm to the population.

An official of the National Police of Haiti in Ouanaminthe explained to local journalists, there was a lot of confusion among Haitians who mistakenly think that the Dominican driver will be tried in his country for having caused the involuntary death of a little girl. He indicated that the Dominican and Haitian authorities confirmed that Carlos León will be presented Wednesday to the prosecutor of Fort Liberté in Haiti.
