Haiti - Politic : The President Martelly calls for the lifting of the blockade of Cuba

Wednesday, the President Martelly, left the country to San José (Costa Rica) to participate in the Third Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC ) on 28 and 29 January.

The Head of State will take advantage of his stay to have bilateral meetings with the presidents of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, and Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solís Riviera.

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, held a meeting Wednesday with the President Michel Martelly.

The main topics of both meetings focused on the regional political panorama, with special attention to the next Summit of the Americas, which will convene the Heads of State and Government of the 35 member states of the OAS in April in Panama. In addition, they discussed the areas of cooperation between the OAS and its member states.

In the meeting, the Haitian Foreign Minister, Duly Brutus, was present.

The President Martelly during his speech at the summit declared "Our obligation to all present here, is to work tirelessly to strengthen the rule of law, to the economic and social progress [...] I continue tocount on the support of the countries of the CELAC during this electoral year for the future of democracy in Haiti.

[...] The Community we decided to create is going to take its rightful place on the world stage. I hope that the CELAC path is marked by many years of success in order to arrive at eradicate poverty."

Furthermore the President Michel Martelly welcomed Cuba / US rapprochement that has entered a phase of restoration and normalization of bilateral relations, while firmly requesting the lifting of the economic blockade, "an unproductive and unjustified decision imposed by United States for over 50 years."
