![]() Haiti - Economy : Violent transport strike 03/02/2015 10:38:58
Very little tap-tap were visible in the main streets. We have been informed that some drivers who wanted to work were prevented and beaten by unidentified individuals. Burning tires barricades, stones and vehicle bodies, erected by the strikers were noted at several arteries intersections of the metropolitan area to prevent divers to go to downtown. Many incidents occurred during the protests. According to local media, at least three people were injured by gunfire, following clashes between youths and police. However, the police confirmed only one shot and wounded person. Witnesses reported they heard automatic gunshots in the suburbs of the capital, where private vehicles were attacked by unknown... Several windshield of public transit vehicle, hich did not respect the strike, were broken and those of private vehicles, vandalized... Strikers also forced the passengers to get off from public transit vehicles whose the driver defied the strike call... The organizers of the first day of strike believe that the movement is a success and was followed by more than 80% in most major cities. Patrick Numa of the National Front of Haitians Unions (signatory of the agreement with the Government) who says understood the economic difficulties of the government, considers that some drivers absent in the streets, were for the acts of violence and vandalism, not in solidarity to the strike. In the Province, including in Petit-Goâve, our correspondent Guyto Mathieu, reports that the first day of strike, supported by the New political alliance and the Mixed Liberation Front was widely respected, not without violence. Commercial and academic activities were paralyzed. The violence was used to compel some citizens to respect the strike. Burning tires barricades were erected in several areas including Chabanne. Some streets were littered with broken bottles. Stones and bottles were thrown on the National Road #2. Unidentified individuals threw stones against the police officers who took control of the crossroadsAndredicette, a strategic point of the national road. The police had to use tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
