Haiti - Environment : TOTAL launches a competition in favor of reforestation

In the 1920s, 60% of Haiti was covered in forests, today only 2%. This massive deforestation has serious consequences: soil erosion, landslides, loss of wildlife and flora, reduced agricultural yields etc...

To try to stop this phenomenon, many projects exist across the country. Reforestation takes many faces: hills reforestation projects, planting fruit trees, nurseries offering different types of trees. But these projects are often unknown to the general public.

The objective of TOTAL Haiti is to give visibility to all these projects, all these individual and collective actions. The oil company also plans to reward the best reforestation projects: the most innovative, the most deserving, the most effective. So that everyone has a chance, there are several categories, allowing smaller projects to earn Adward, without penalizing the larger projects.

Will be considered, existing projects for over 3 years. Associations can have other activities as reforestation, but the or the reforestation programs must exist for at least three years. To define, in each category, which projects will be the big winners, we will refer to several criteria :

  • How long does the project exist ?

  • What are its objectives for the future ?

  • Area planted, number of surviving trees.

  • Number of people involved, knowledge of the project in the region in which it operates.

  • Operational functioning: origin of seedlings, monitoring, and species diversity of plants.

  • Economic aspects : financial gains of the project, its added value, its financing.
