Haiti - Justice: Operation «Punch» to the Prison of Croix-des-Bouquets
Wednesday, as part of the operation "Punch" against pretrial detention, launched on March 2 at the National Penitentiary https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-13297-haiti-justice-operation-punch.html , Pierre-Richard Casimir, the Minister of Justice and Public Security accompanied by the Ambassador of Canada in Haiti, Ms. Paula Caldwell St-Onge, visited the civil prison of Croix-des-Bouquets. The Casimir Minister welcomed the smooth running of this modern correctional center and meeting international standards. Let's recall that it is in this prison that Clifford Brandt and 328 other prisoners had escaped August 10, 2014 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11785-haiti-justice-clifford-brandt-escaped.html

Accompanied by the Heads of of prosecutions of Port-au-Prince and Croix-des-Bouquets, the Minister met with inmates and noted all the irregularities that vitiate their file. He clearly reminded the Government Commissioners, the need to avoid, at all times, preventive imprisonment inviting them to always to always ensure a properly characterization of offenses, regretting that records are often sent to the investigating office so that they could be treated quickly in Criminal Court.

For her part, Ambassador of Canada has sent words of congratulations to the place of the Minister Casimir, who recently launched the "punch" operation. According to, Ms St Onge, this operation is going to provide relief for some detainees. In addition, she expressed the pride of his country to have largely contributed to the construction of this prison with a capacity of 800 inmates, opened in October 2012 as well as the Commissioner of the town, reminding "It is not enough to say that this prison is the best of our prisons, we must ensure that our prisons are consistent" want a better functioning of the Haitian prison system," wishing a better functioning of the Haitian prison system.

The Casimir Minister, announced that as part of its fight against preventive detention, he was planning to visit this week the civil prison of Pétion-ville, in order to attract the attention of other stakeholders, on the situation of certain litigants, who are still in prison in prolonged pretrial detention, when they could be released if they had had the chance to appear before their natural judges.
