Haiti - Security : Haiti nominated for the Sasakawa Award

A Haitian delegation, led by Hertz Obas, Director General of the Ministry of Interior and Local Authorities composed among other of senior officials of the Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation, from the Civil Protection (DPC), participates from 14 to 18 March 2015, in Sendai, Japan, at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

The conference, organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, with the support of several international partners, focuses on the review of progress in the context of the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters (HFA), and methods of cooperation to strengthen the resilience of Nations face major natural hazards.

The Haitian delegation, as well as senior government officials, politicians, representatives of civil society and several thousand participants from around the world will discuss at the conference, of the experience gained at regional and national levels through strategies, risk reduction plans and the implementation of their recommendations. At the end of the 3rd Conference, a framework document will be adopted (2015-2025) and the terms of a periodic review of the implementation of this framework that will serve as guide for countries to undertake population resilience building activities to natural hazards.

Note that the efforts of Haiti, in the framework of the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005-2015) for the reduction of risk, have been officially recognized by the judges of Sasakawa Award of the United Nations, which placed Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, the Director of DPC, in the list of 12 nominees of 88 candidates for this award.
