Haiti - Security : More than 8,000 homes flooded and already 6 victims

Monday, Mrs. Alta Jean-Baptiste, the Director of Civil Protection (DPC) accompanied by Nadia Lochard, the Departmental Coordinator of the West and meteorologist Ronald Semelfort, gave a preliminary assessment of the damage caused by recent torrential rains that have hit the country during the past weekend.

According to Mrs. Jean Baptiste, 6 people were killed in these showers. In Delmas 1, two children aged 3 and 7 years were swept away by a torrent formed by the showers in the ravine near their home, in Solino a young woman of 24 years was killed by the collapse of a wall church on her house. Three other people lost their lives in the town of Carrefour specifically in Sapotille. "The West and Grand Anse are the departments most affected by the rain of the past two weeks that have caused among other landslides and substantial agricultural losses [...] 8,377 houses were flooded, more than 7,000 in Cité Soleil, and more than 500 in Tabarre [...]"

Teams of Civil Protection called people to the greatest vigilance, the risks of landslides are important. In his speech, Nadia Lochard has called for vigilance "The notice to floods and landslides in conjunction with rainfall events is maintained. Beware! [...] The most affected towns in the West: Gressier, Tabarre, Cite Soleil and Delmas."

"Faced with rainfall accumulations already registered in the country, it is strongly advised to the residents in areas at risk to remain vigilant in relation to rainfall events which can cause flooding and landslides," for its part states the National Meteorological Centre (CNM) of Haiti.

At the end of her speech, Mrs. Jean-Baptiste invited the general public and residents of areas at risk in particular to respect the instructions of the authorities to avoid casualties.
