Haiti - Health : The Cuban medical cooperation an important asset for Haiti

Wednesday, within the framework of Forum "Cuba Salud 2015", held at the Palace of Conventions in La Havana (Cuba) since April 20 and which ends this Friday, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-13640-haiti-health-the-ministry-of-public-health-in-cuba.html Florence Duperval Guillaume, Minister of Public Health and Population has emphasized the importance for Haiti that had the establishment of the Cuban medical cooperation.

She acknowledged the significant improvement in health indicators of the Haitian population since the arrival of Cuban professionals in 2010. Citing maternal mortality that has decreased from 350 to 154 per 100,000 live births with infant mortality rates who have gone from 75 to 57 per 100,000 live births.

More than 700 Cuban staff work permanently in Haiti, with the objective of achieving universal access and health coverage, explained the Minister Guillaume. Epidemiological surveillance (for cholera, Ebola and other infections), prevention and health promotion, organization of the health system, are some of the areas that are developed by the Cubans.

She also noted that more than 800 Haitian doctors had graduated through the collaboration of the Cuban state, adding that currently, the focus was placed on the training of specialists.

She mentioned the tripartite cooperation project Brazil-Cuba-Haiti and Venezuela-Cuba-Haiti, which aim to jointly strengthen the Haitian health system and which allowed to build dozens of hospitals in Haiti.

However, she noted that the problems of financing and access of the population to primary and secondary health care, are still unresolved challenges.
