Haiti - Security : The Minustah closes its offices in Hinche and Fort Liberté 21/06/2015 11:19:37
Thursday and Friday, as part of the the continuation of phased withdrawal and reconfiguration in the field, ongoing for three years, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) has closed two liaison offices with the community, confirmed Sophie Boutaud de la Combe, Deputy Head of the Office of Communications of the UN mission. These two offices were located in the cities of Hinche (137 km northeast of Port-au-Prince) and Fort-Liberté (331 km north-east of the capital). Recall that the mission (established on 1 June 2004), by a resolution of the UN Security Council, executes a plan to reduce its military presence to 2,370 soldiers [now 5,021] and 2,601 police officers. "I am optimistic when I see the hunger for peace in society and the authorities' commitment," said Friday, Sandra Honoré, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti who also thanked the dedication of staff to the stabilization of the region and promised to continue its support "We will continue to support you in this electoral period in the Centre". Sandra Honoré took the opportunity to visit the base of Morne Casse near Fort-Liberté, where a mixed battalion of 409 people including Peruvian troops (164) and Uruguay (245) was created to assist in the Northeast Department "Their participation is vital to the mission," said the Brazilian Lieutenant-General José Luiz Jaborandy Jr., military commander of the Minustah.
