Haiti - FLASH : Unbelievable, the Government was not aware of the border closures !
The border between the towns of Ouanaminthe and Dajabón, closed Friday morning on the orders of Samuel Fidèle the interim executive officer of the commune (appointed in April 2015), did not come from instructions of the Government contrary to earlier statements, it was reopened in the late afternoon and the situation has returned to normal.

This closure has prevented the holding of weekly binational market, in addition to cause significant economic losses to traders on both sides of the border, has given way to much speculation and rumors, in the absence of official communication, while continued voluntary return of our compatriots living in an irregular migratory situation in the territory of the Dominican Republic.

Many saw in this closing a firm response of the Haitian Government to the Dominicans, while in Santo Domingo, at the highest political level, one wondered what had justified the decision of Haiti, without prior notice...

In Haiti, the Ministry of Interior claims not to have been aware of the decision of the mayor. On its side Hugo Charles, the Departmental Delegate confirms that Mayor Samuel Fidèle "took this decision alone, without consulting local authorities and the government," a decision in contradiction with the statements of several Haitian ministers, who had given the guarantee that week, that the binational market would remain open.

Rothchild François Jr., the Government Spokesman explained that "The Mayor of Ouanaminthe has taken this provision as a result of incidents that had occurred the previous day on the border."

For his part, Samuel Fidèle, at the origin of this closure gave for justification "I was forced to close the border while waiting to hold discussions with local and Dominican military authorities about mistreatment of Haitian citizens [...]" adding "I am the mayor, if I see with my own eyes the Dominicans mistreat Haitian, I have the right to stop all activities," claiming to have no problem to be revoked to the extent that he says he acts for the good of the population.
