This Tuesday in Nadim room of the hotel Royal Oasis, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI) has opened a major two-day workshop (Tuesday and Wednesday, July 15) for the economic development of Haiti. This workshop aims to categorize the commitments under the Agreement for the Facilitation of Exchanges (AFE), proposed by Haiti for its notification to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This workshop follows the conclusion of negotiations on the AFE, by members of the WTO in December 2013, at the 9th Ministerial Conference in Bali.

Upon entry into force, the AFE creates obligations that force WTO members including Haiti, to improve their procedures, their transparency and customs efficiency, as well as cooperation between border control agencies and the private sector.

Developing countries and least developed countries should classify themselves, individually the provisions of the agreement in one of the categories: a) implementation upon entry into force; b) implementation delay or c) implementation in connection with the acquisition of capacity through assistance and support. Haiti will have also to choose their implementation date.
