Haiti - Social : Towards a new poverty map and of potentialities of Haiti

Following the Haiti's Poverty Map published in 2004, the Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation (MPCE) decided to undertake the development of a new poverty map and of potentialities of Haiti, in order to update the information and develop a document of mapping and analysis in favor of a better appreciation of the nature of poverty of the poor at the communal sections and have an indispensable tool for decision making in the fight for poverty reduction and generation of growth.

Until the launch of the operation of the map on the entire national territory and in order to test the methodology and data collection tools prepared for this purpose, the Observatory of Poverty and Social Exclusion (ONPES) and the National geospatial Information Centre (CNIGS) organized a one-week pilot exercise in the Northwest department. More than a hundred workers were mobilized and deployed in the field for the collection of quantitative data on basic social services available in the 39 communal sections.

Several executives of ONPES and MPCE accompanied the agents in order to organize workshops "focus group" intended to collect qualitative data needed to assess the information on the allocation of services, their accessibility and functionality.

After this data collection of information, technical teams are striving to process the data collected in order to produce the different maps and reports that will allow to adjust to the new methodology of the map of the poverty of Haiti.

Note that the realization of this new poverty map and of potentialities of Haiti, is co-financed by the Haitian State and the European Union.
